Lewis Hamilton wins the pole for F1 record 92nd time in his career.
Mercedes is not taking last week’s Formula 1 defeat lighty.
After losing the top spot of the podium to Max Verrstappen and Red Bull at Silverstone in the F1 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Mercedes and drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas sent a message with a 1-2 qualifying effort on Saturday at Barcelona.
Verstappen qualified third, and Racing Point’s Segio Perez and Lance Stroll qualified 3-4.
Mercedes locked up the front row in Barcelona for the seventh time in the last eight years. For Hamilton, it is his 92nd career pole, extending his own F1 record. The front-row start in Sunday’s F1 Spanish Grand Prix will be the 150th of his career.
Hamilton was quick to pass the credit around to the Mercedes team after locking up the top spot.
“These guys do such an awesome job,” Hamilton said. “I was with the guys until 10 p.m. last night, going over all the details, how can we improve, what areas in the race we can get better, because these Red Bulls are super fast.”
Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Alex Albon qualified sixth and will be on the third row.
“There’s such a long way down to turn 1 here, so the job is not done,” Hamilton said, in reference to Sunday’s start. It’s very hard to follow here. I’m just going to try and get the best start I can.”
Verstappen comes into the race 30 points back of Hamilton and with the momentum of last’s weeks win.
“We know that over one lap we struggle a bit compared to Mercedes, but on the long runs it is all closer and we can extract a bit more from our car.” Verstappen said. “We will try to stay as close to Mercedes as possible, put pressure on them and hopefully we can have a good fight. I am confident that we can do a good job. It will be hard to beat Mercedes as they still look very fast but we don’t give up.”
