With thoughts turning to the 2023 driver market, Williams boss Jost Capito admits that the team could be facing a "great headache" in selecting their line-up.
Williams boss Jost Capito admits that Formula 2 driver Logan Sargeant could add to their dilemma over choosing their driver line-up for 2023.
Sargeant is a member of the Williams Driver Academy and currently sits third in the F2 standings, having recently scored back-to-back victories in the Feature Race at Silverstone and the Red Bull Ring.
The 21-year-old American’s form has impressed Capito, who acknowledges that this could prove to be an added complication as the team consider which drivers will be in their F1 cars next year.
If Sargeant goes on to win the Formula 2 championship, this would mean that he would be unable to compete in the series for a second year.
As such, Capito admits that the prospect of this – and how it would factor Sargeant into the F1 team’s plans – could give him a lot to think about.
“It would be a great headache, wouldn’t it?” Capito joked to media, including RacingNews365.com.
“I’ve had worse ones. Of course we are impressed. It’s his first season in F2, and we didn’t put any pressure on him so he has the time to develop.
“He’s really impressed us with how fast he has got to grips with the car, the tyre management and getting results.
“How he got the pole [in France] was really impressive. He will be in a Formula 1 car in the future, I’m absolutely convinced.”
With the Formula 2 season not ending until November – with the finale being held on the same weekend as F1’s final event of 2022 in Abu Dhabi – this adds to the problem of trying to decide a driver’s future, according to Capito.
“For Logan, for example, he needs the super licence points,” the Williams CEO explained.
“And for that, he has to finish in the top five in the championship. In the moment, it looks good, but [it] can always [go] the other way pretty quickly, so it’s quite tricky to take early decisions on a Formula 2 driver as long as the season is not over.
“That’s part of the decision making, of course.”
