Red Bulll boss has concerns the calendar is becoming unsustainable
Christian Horner has voiced concerns that the expected 24-race calendar for 2023 is now excessive. The new calendar would see the season end in November,  including a doubleheader at Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi.
As the F1 calendar continues to grow, teams are findings themselves under more and more pressure during the season. Triple headers in June and July now mean the summer break during August is very much needed for the teams to recharge following an intense schedule.
The pressure is likely to continue to increase, with Qatar and Las Vegas will join the calendar full-time from next season. The impacts of expansion are now being seen at other circuits.  Belgium and Monaco are at very real risk of being dropped as the sport continues its rapid expansion.
While the bigger teams can relieve this pressure by switching crews during the season, this is not something all teams have the budget or resource level to do. Exhaustion in these teams is a realistic possibility during the summer months.
GPFans is reporting Christian Horner has now publicly questioned the calendar’s expansion, calling saying “it feels a bit too much”.  Horner did also state that the new races are important:
“When you talk about 24 weekends out of 52 in a year, it does feel too much.
“But then when you look at the venues that are coming in, you think ‘Ok, I’d definitely go an extra weekend for Vegas.’
“If South Africa was on the calendar, I’d definitely do an extra weekend for that as well.
Horner also addressed the potential return of the Chinese Grand Prix. Dropped in 2020 during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the race at Shanghai has been cancelled every year since. This is due to high cases in the Chinese province. Horner addressed that it is an “important” market, as well as the ideas to shorten the Grand Prix weekends.  Calling the current situation “on the limit” of what teams can cope with:
“China might be coming back. It’s such an important market and I think they’re working hard to make the weekends shorter and operationally more bearable for the teams and the travelling staff.
“And it’s going to need that combination but it’s right on the limit.”
The 2023 F1 calendar has yet to be announced, with the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of its current deal, alongside Monaco. Both have yet to be confirmed by F1 as having new deals. The calendar continues to expand, but this could potentially come at the cost of classic and well-loved circuits.
These days, even the biggest teams can only rotate travelling staff to a limited extent with a budget cap, but Horner is right, more or less on the limit.
Luckily for them, 24 is the upper limit, so that’s where the rise will ultimately stop.
Concerning triple-headers, June & July didn’t have any this year & they’re unlikely to have next year either based on the schedule info so far.
Quite likely only COTA-Mexico-Brazil.
France rather than Monaco is likely to lose out alongside Belgium, though.
Nevertheless, everything will become clear eventually.

A little girl on my plane today was wearing a @MercedesAMGF1 hat. I commented on it and asked if she has seen @WSeriesRacing. She then proceeded to pull a W Series hat out of her rucksack. This is what we love to see!
Today there are just four engine suppliers in F1. Wind back 25 years, and it was a very different story
