At the Hungarian Grand Prix, F1 fans were treated to two F1 greats going at it hammer and tongs in the final laps of the race, as Fernando Alonso defended for all he was worth against a charging Lewis Hamilton. And if you thought the action had looked tense from outside the cars, as the video above shows, that was nothing compared to how nail-biting it was in Hamilton and Alonso’s cockpits.
Hamilton was fighting his way back from an early-race Mercedes strategy hiccup that saw him give up his lead to eventual race winner Esteban Ocon on Lap 5 of 70 – while by Lap 55, Hamilton, on much fresher tyres, had breezed up to the rear of Ocon’s fourth-placed Alpine team mate Alonso.

Hamilton admitted afterwards that he had braced himself for a tough duel – but perhaps not as tough as the one we witnessed, as the two champions fought it out lap after lap, with Alonso doing his best to ensure that Ocon’s lead at the front of the field wouldn’t come under attack from Hamilton.
