A late showing from Felipe Drugovich saw the MP Motorsport racer snatch pole in the final minute of Formula 2 Qualifying with a time of 1m 40.422s. The Brazilian finished ahead of Trident’s Richard Verschoor and Hitech Grand Prix’s Marcus Armstrong.
In between red flags for Theo Pourchaire and Logan Sargeant, Marcus Armstrong had emerged in first, before a third stoppage with five minutes on the clock. Having already used up his rubber, Armstrong was forced to watch the remainder of the session from the pit wall when running resumed.

Notching a 1m 41.050s, Armstrong thought he’d wrapped things up before Drugovich posted a purple first sector. Continuing to go green in Sector 2 and purple in the final sector, Drugovich found a phenomenal six-tenths on a more developed surface to snatch pole from the Hitech racer.
Verschoor – fresh off his Sprint Race win in Bahrain – was the only other driver to go under 1m 41s and dove into second. Armstrong took third after Doohan was disqualified for failing to supply the required 0.8 kg of fuel in parc ferme. The Alpine junior has been given permission to start both races from the back of the grid.
Ralph Boschung and Red Bull junior Liam Lawson completed the top five ahead of DAMS’ Ayumu Iwasa. Calan Williams qualified seventh to put both Trident’s in the top 10, ahead of Red Bull Academy driver Juri Vips and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Jake Hughes.
Red Bull junior Dennis Hauger finished 10th and will start from reverse pole ahead of Hughes in the Sprint Race at 1530 local time on Saturday.
