Max Verstappen would like to see fewer races on the Formula 1 calendar, despite it looking to grow beyond 2023.
Max Verstappen has suggested the ideal number of races for the F1 calendar, as it looks set to increase to more races beyond 2023.
Next year’s calendar will see an additional event in Las Vegas, as well as the anticipated return of the Chinese and Qatar Grands Prix – with the current Concorde Agreement limiting the schedule to 24 races.
When asked what rule changes he would like to see F1 adopt, Verstappen was clear that he wants fewer races to make up the busy schedule.
“Less races. I think like 16, just pick all the good tracks and leave all the others out,” Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365.com.
In addition to reducing the number of races, Verstappen was also critical of the increased car weight.
Over the last 10 years, the minimum car weight has increased by 158 kilograms, making the 2022 machines the heaviest in the history of F1.
This is largely due to the introduction of safety advances such as the Halo, along with the banning of refuelling, contributing to larger and heavier cars.
“The weight of the cars is extremely heavy, which I think is not great,” added Verstappen.
“I didn’t really see a quick solution for it, but overall, following [other cars with the new rules] has been a lot better.
“On some tracks, it’s still very hard to follow, but that’s also in combination with tyres overheating and stuff, so there is a lot of things to look at.”
